Mombasa is the main sea gate on the East African coastline and is Kenya’s second major metropolis and cruise ship centre. It has a harmonious blending of the great cultures of Africa, Asia and Europe going back to almost two thousand years.
The town had a turbulent history as symbolized by Fort Jesus, a massive fortification built and completed by the Portuguese in the 16 Century.
Other main attractions include the old town which lies next to the old port and it is a fascinating place of antiquity worth seeing.
The Mombasa marine reserve was created to protect the precious coral heads and marine life from damage that would otherwise be caused by overfishing and trophy collections. Dhow trips, water skiing and deep sea fishing are easily arranged from Mombasa.
