The Maasai Mara national reserve forms the northern part of the huge Serengeti eco-system. Located to the South west of Nairobi and forming the border with Tanzania, it spreads over 1510km square of rolling plains, sudden rocky outcrops and green winding rivers. It is arguably Kenya’s most popular game sanctuary boasting of the world’s annual migration of wildebeests, zebras and gazelles to and from the Serengeti plains across the Tanzania border and the Mara river to reach the Maasai Mara grazing fields. The dramatic crossing of the river and the preying on the migrants by predators can be viewed. There is a profusion of all types of wildlife including the big five. We should also remember that a part of the movie ‘Out of Africa’ was made here. Hot air balloon Safaris is readily available here.
