Amboseli lies at an altitude of between 1,200m – 1400m above sea level, immediately North West of Mt. Kilimanjaro on the border with Tanzania. It is Kenya’s international biosphere reserve which covers an area of 392km sq, forming part of the larger 3000 Amboseli ecosystem. In the Maasai language, Amboseli means ‘place of water’ because the park has an endless supply of water which is filtered through thousands of meters of volcanic rock from Mt. Kilimanjaro. During the dry season, a captivating feature is the simmering dry lake bed where false mirages of populated horizon, interspersed with herds of zebras and gnus hover in front of visitors. Vast herds of elephants, zebras, wildebeest, giraffes, impalas, cheetahs and lions are the main attractions. This park is also famous with the film’ the snows of Kilimanjaro’.
